Getting motivated for anything can sometimes be an arduous task. It really ups the game when the task you are trying to accomplish is a behemoth and it takes a lot of work and dedication to accomplish the end result. The worst feeling is feeling like you let yourself down by not succeeding or staying true to the process. Here are some ideas for helping you to keep the motivation when you’ve decided is it time for it.
- Set your goal/goals. Having something to keep you aspiring for more is a real game changer. It is good to challenge yourself, but make sure what you are asking of yourself is practical, achievable, and safe.
- When you are having a hard time getting motivated, don’t just think about what you want to accomplish, think about how it will make you feel! For example, drinking that super veggie filled smoothie may not taste as good at the moment as a more fatty, carbohydrate-filled meal, but you will feel lighter and healthier, instead of regretful after consuming something heavy.
- Plan shorter goals more often. This makes your tasks seem more attainable. You can always add more tasks after you get your momentum! Shorter goals can trick the mind into thinking that it won’t take as much effort or energy to complete, but when you celebrate one success, start planning out your next! Accomplishing a goal no matter how large or small can be a motivational boost in itself!
- Reward yourself! Mentally treat yourself to celebrate your success. Keep in mind, however, that in certain scenarios, you should be rational with your reward system. Examples of possible bad scenarios are,
- You motivated yourself to workout to lose weight, so rewarding yourself with sugary or fatty foods may be counter-productive!
- You motivated yourself to save an extra $100, then you blew it by buying a $100+ item.
- Take time to focus on what you’ve accomplished. If you don’t celebrate your successes, they won’t feel like successes. Keep yourself motivated to tackle the rest of your goals.
- If you feel overwhelmed, break it down. Tackle one piece at a time. It is better to take more time to accomplish your ultimate goal, then to get so overwhelmed that you quit it all at the beginning.
- Pace yourself! It’s not a race. We all want to go from 0-successful in a matter of minutes, but long term growth(or loss depending on the task) doesn’t work like that. The longer you work at something, the easier it is to make it a more permanent part of your lifestyle or routine.
- Don’t quit. Recognize that if you do, you’re letting yourself down. Even if you temporarily lose sight of your task, as soon as you see the issue, pick yourself back up! Don’t let it go, just try harder the next time! And the next, and the next until you’ve got it!
- Find someone to work at the same goal with you. Everyone likes support, but motivation can sometimes be found in simply helping someone else long their path as well! Plus it gives you someone to remind you of your accountability.
- Find the motivation in other sources. If you just can’t pull together your own motivation, get a jump start from someone who has done it before! Research what you need to be motivated to do, read stories by people who were successful at it, find inspiration in like-minded people.
I hope this inspires you to get up and get going! Get motivated!
